Commentary — The downside of waiting for the “golden hour” of light at a place like the Grand Canyon is that you have to deal with lengthening shadows, so I didn’t wait for too long. The photograph was taken from the Point Imperial lookout. For the first time that I recall I used a polarizer filter; I should have been using them earlier. I metered through the filter beforehand with a spot meter to determine that it would absorb two stops of light, so I compensated by opening the aperture two stops from the metered reading of the scene, from f/11 to f/5.6. The f/5.6 opening happens to be the largest aperture available with this lens; the Schneider is actually considered to be a fast lens by view camera standards. The result is not too bad– the spire in the foreground is a little “bright”, but I consider the overall image to be properly exposed.
