Description — This is Mill Creek in Rocky Mountain National Park. The photo was taken in late afternoon on September 25, 2004.
Camera Nerd Info — Linhof Super Technika V 4×5 view camera, Fujinon-W 180mm f/5.6 lens, Fuji Provia 100F film, exposure 2s @ f/45, no movements.
Commentary — I used a two-second exposure in order to show the water flowing. Frequently you need a neutral-density filter in order to block enough light to do this, but here it was late afternoon and I was able to make a two-second exposure by stopping down to f/45. Yes, f/45– view camera lenses have small minimum apertures, which come in handy for photographing streams and waterfalls. From this photo and similar ones I have concluded that a good rule of thumb for exposure of a stream is two seconds; for a waterfall, one second.
This image has not been digitally manipulated other than to remove a blueish cast in the film. Otherwise the film transparency looks exactly like the JPEG shown here. The excess blue was probably due to the high altitude and dim light in late afternoon, and the lack of a UV filter on the lens.
