Bryce Hoodoos

Description — Hoodoos at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah.  The photograph was taken in the morning in May 2011 from Inspiration Point.

Camera Nerd Info — Linhof Super Technika V 4×5 view camera, Nikkor-M 300mm f/9 lens, Fuji Provia 100F film, exposure 1/8s @ f/22, no movements.

Commentary — The rock spires are called hoodoos. They seem to glow in the early morning sun because they reflect the sunlight to each other.  Bryce Canyon opens to the southeast and as a result it doesn’t catch the morning sun full-on until December – January, so in May only some of the hoodoos were getting direct sunlight.  I wish to return some winter to get a better shot, however, the canyon is at 8000 feet altitude and I’m sure there would be plenty of snow in January.  It will be a challenging visit.
